my red right ankle
My ankle is sprained! After weeks of “man my foot hurts” and a visit to a sports medicine-physical therapist, some time off skates and then some time back on skates, I went to the doctor on Wednesday. She confirmed my ankle is sprained and that I should take at least another couple of weeks off skates.
So that sucks.
I’d already been rehabbing it and going easy on it (I had to drop out of an endurance practice for about half an hour to ice my ankle), but now it’s official that my ankle is in bad shape. Not injury-leave bad shape, but still, I’m frustrated.
I think it’s more of a cumulative sprain than anything else — a wobble on a high heel there, a stumble here, a fall on skates there, walking around in shoes with shitty or no support when I already have bad arches. Just lots of things that added up. And so my doctor said, because it took so much time to build up, it’s going to take time to wind back down.
I got acupuncture on it yesterday and it hurt like hell. Usually it doesn’t hurt like that (for, you know, having needles in your skin) but I had to go into full-on “focus on your inner place” yoga mode to get my mind off the pain. And then she rubbed my ankle with Tiger Balm and it was crazy painful (and I smelled like Tiger Balm in the office for the rest of the day).
But nothing is broken. I can walk unassisted, mostly without pain. It sucks, but I’m lucky that it’s not that bad in the grand scheme of ankle injuries.
