the doc pretty much just gave me abdominal workouts, told me to stretch it and ice it. know of any other good exercises for it?
My doctor gave me a list of exercises from RelayHealth, so I googled and found them here: http://www.summitmedicalgroup.com/library/sports_health/sacroiliac_exercises/ There are pictures, too!
Definitely keep it warm — I spent most of my time...

Get ‘im, ladies!

1. Take off that garter-belt-tutu-thing and pay your fuckin’ dues. Lay track, keep score, haul water, stamp hands. There will be a time for semi-nudity and obnoxious self-promotion. And that time is after you’ve actually proven yourself on the track. Teams don’t draft rollergirls. Teams draft…

it’s time for new skates. every time my foot shifts in my boot i almost lose my balance and i feel like i’m going to break an ankle when i snow plow unless my boots are so tight that my toes go numb. i know they’re expensive which means i’ll have a super hard time deciding. i have no clue what…
Take your time at the shop! They’re an investment, and you want to...
universe says no
I was going to just skate with the stupid outdoor wheel and its stupid bearing and get my axle fixed tomorrow, but then around 4 pm my throat started getting really sore and bumpy, and then the coughing started. Probably not a good idea to infect everyone on the league right at the start of the season.
The universe clearly wants me to stay home.
Stupid universe.
eff eff eff eff
I have half a bearing stuck to one of my axles. It will NOT come off.
I had to do an emergency corner-store run for WD-40 to see if I could lube it up, but it’s not budging. I’ve tried all sorts of angles and a wrench and yeah, it’s just not happening and my hands are covered in grease.
I don’t want to have to take the skate in to the shop tomorrow after work — I...

Scanning Two Evils, I realize that there are a lot of truly awful derby names. Like, so, so, so, bad. But here are a couple good ones:
Dawn of the Shred
Lickolotopus
Plug McCracken (ref)
Eda Dyck
MaHOTma Blondie
Sticky Vicky
Snatch Adams
Lesbolina Jolie
Hellarad has an excellent article about terrible derby names. Apparently next season there’s going to be a...
(Because I don’t want to keep putting my feet all over Tumblr…)
The taping worked… sort of? I didn’t get blisters where I taped, but I did get tiny razor-thin blisters in the gaps between the tape. Awesome. I’ll check Walgreens for the ace bandage-y tape tomorrow.
I skated around the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building and AT&T Park (I tried to go over Lefty...

I did my first real class! I survived!
Today’s WoD was actually fairly… I don’t want to say easy, but it was uncomplicated.
- Death by Pull-Ups
You start with one minute to do one pull-up. Easy. Do one and rest until the clock beeps. Now you have one minute to do two pull-ups. Rest until the clock beeps. Now you have a minute to do three pull-ups. And so on and so forth.
I...
Important Derby Lesson #15
rollerderbywillsavemysoul:
DON’T GO TO PRACTICE WITHOUT EATING.
I’m still trying to figure out what foods are best and what time I should be eating at so that like I’m digesting and not gross and about to puke, but also going to practice without having had anything to eat at all was not a good idea either. Other skaters said to finish eating at least 3 hours before practice so I’ll work around...
YEAAAAAH
I made my dad watch the derby-themed CSI episode with me last night, and I was amused for several reasons:
- Zoe Bell is now going to be the go-to “she’s got a SAG card and can roller skate!” girl, which is fine because I love Zoe Bell, but it sucks that they didn’t let her use her accent.
- I had to tell my dad that no, no one has ever broken their spine on the rail and...

Final day of on-ramping! We did all of the “accessory” movements today — hollow rocks, arch rocks, push-ups/rows/dips on the gymnastic rings, pull-ups and starting kipping pull-ups, rope climbing (HA HA HAAA, this was terrible, I almost fell off the rope and the coach was all, “okay, so we will not have you climb the rope for a while until you build up your upper body...

Today’s lesson was deadlifts, sumo deadlift high pull, and medicine ball cleans.
I also hit myself in the face with a ten pound medicine ball, because durr, I play sports, I have coordination!
Mini-WoD:
7 minutes AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) of:
7 medicine ball cleans
7 push-ups
I did six rounds! And I am terrible at the sumo deadlift high pull, but I got better at it!
Thursday...
tis the season
My quads have not stopped hurting since Tuesday, I’ve got a blister and a hot spot on my right foot from my new skates, and my abs hurt when I sneeze.
Speaking of the new skates, I’m pretty happy — even though I’ve switched from a nylon plate to a metal one, my skates feel lighter on my feet. They’re closer-fitting so they’re not big and clunky. Once I adjusted...
rollerderbyandotherheartbreakers asked: Honestly I believe that if you have a fabulous derby coach show up, by all means use him/her, but generally having a skater run team of trainers is the best idea imo. :)
Anonymous asked: I am on a roller derby team that is just getting started, i feel like things are getting mixed up and tension is running high. so i was wondering from experienced girls and teams, would you say that a team would be better with a coach or a girl on the team be the leader? I personally think that we just need a coach and a leader being a team member whos going to be involved in playing will become...
I don’t know if you’ve seen it yet, but Melicious, author of Rollergirl: Totally True Tales from the Track and former Texas Rollergirls’ Hotrod Honey is really into CrossFit and blogs about it here: http://theclothesmakethegirl.blogspot.com/ :)
Enjoy!

Ahahaa, no one caught my typo, but I have fixed it!
Today we did presses, push presses (where you dip your knees, then press up over your head), and then push jerks.
Since I have little to no upper body strength, this was a good one to learn, especially since my quads are still unhappy from an hour of squats (including tabata squats) on Tuesday and an hour and a half of practice yesterday.
We...

So part of doing CrossFit is keeping a journal about it, and thus I’m going to be writing it up in here, with my particular notes on how CrossFit training is applicable to derby training.
I’ll keep it under cuts, mostly, so you don’t have to click through unless you’re really interested.
Let me just say this: Day One was pretty much a full hour of squats. I almost cried...
Anonymous asked: I love this blog, it is really an enjoyment. I think it's impressive you are part of the B.A.D. girls. A few months back I joined a team in Northern Utah and there were no tryouts, i'm just on the team automatically. So, it would intimidate me to have any tryouts whatsoever... I would panic. Although, I have no questions really just saying thanks for a great blog packed with info for...
