resolutions revolution (J)
So before I go and get drugged up and my teeth yanked tomorrow, I would like to wish a very happy new year to everyone, and thank you for the support/reblogs/likings. We’re still relatively new to Tumblr (and derby, obviously), but we are glad to be here because it is awesome. Obviously, my major New Year’s resolution is to make the league. Even if it’s just the dink class...

we explain
FriendJ: So how does it work? How do you score points?
J: Well, if K and I are both jammers, like this--
K: Oh, I was just going to get cheese.

we talk on gchat all the time
J: http://wftda.com/wftda_minimum_skills_requirements_v2.pdf
K: Thank you.
J: No problem!
The check list is the first five pages
The rest is the official rules test
K: oh my god, every time I read it I am reminded that this is effing difficult and I may fail
J: Psssh.
[Skating lessons] will help us with the actual skating parts; the girls will help us with the blocking/falling/whipping etc.
K: I know, but it's incredibly frustrating when I feel like I've been working out for so long, skating twice a week, eating semi-healthily, etc. and this is SO HARD
J: It's a different skill set than anything else we've done.
It doesn't even compare to ice skating, which we did extremely casually
We hated running (and sports with running), so the fact that we have to build endurance as well as strength and speed is really tough for both of us.
K: This is true.
J: Because I can dance around for an hour and a half, but if I have to run for more than a short sprint, I'm like NO GOD AWFUL TERRIBLE
As you know!
K: Yes.
J: But we will be okay.
That's why we're working on it now, and working on it on our own time, instead of just relying on the derby girls to train us into it.

off skates for a month (J)
misfittoys: derbypursuit: Meh! After this Saturday, I won’t be skating until January 30th. I’m getting my wisdom teeth out before the end of the year, partially so I can max out my ‘09 dental insurance, partially so I can take the New Year’s Eve weekend (which is now a five-day weekend for me) to recover, and partially so I don’t have to worry about my teeth once I’m in the busy season. Skating FAILURE last night--
After a particularly hard cross-training workout on Saturday and two hours of bootcamp on Sunday, I was so sore on Monday that I could barely walk.  That was my day of rest for this week (the goal is to get some kind of exercise 6 out of 7 days a week, guys).  Yesterday, after an hour of excruciatingly slow bocce ball at my office holiday party, running errands, buying Christmas presents for...

Introduction (K)
As my girl Ms. J mentioned below, we’ve known each other a long time now, and we initially bonded as best friends at a young tweenie age over the more cerebral pasttimes, less athletics.  I have never been what you would call “athletic.”  I am somewhat sporty, if anything.  My parents tried to put us in organized sports as kids to keep us active, an endeavor which happened to...

introductory (J)
Hello to those of you who started following us! I’m J, and I share this tumblr with K. It’s mostly a link dump for our reference, but also a brain dump for when we want to talk derby or fitness or what have you. Just a little background on the two of us: K and I have known each other and been besties since we were twelve, as we both hated running in gym class and eventually fell in...

Drills to Work On
Pace line keeping an arm’s length between skaters; Crossovers in a straight line to the left and right, without wall assistance; Crossovers in a tight circle, step-step-glide once or twice per circle without lurching forward/feeling like I am going to faceplant; T-stops at speed, both sides; Repeated snowplow stops down the length of the track; Duck walk/run (ow my bum muscles are sore...

re: the roller derby twins
So these links are all floating around the internet, and I’m putting all of these pieces together in one place, and then I will have my thoughts. In October, an article in the New York Times on the Barry twins went live. Basically, these two girls from Ohio  went to Rutgers journalism school, then tried to make it big in the big city, moaning and crying about how hard it is to find a job...

dear santa
Dear Santa, I’ve been a very good girl this year. But next year, I want to be a B.A.D. Girl. Thus I would like the following: - new indoor wheels (with bearings) — I would be happy with Atom G-Rods (white) or Radar Zodiacs (ice blue or red). I don’t think I’ll need these until later this year, though, maybe once I get closer to actual Boot Camp. - a new set of lock...
