Anonymous asked: Re: the shoulder support, I dislocated my shoulder back in July, then had surgery in October. In the interim (still playing derby, of course), I found the Bauerfeind Omotrain shoulder support. LOVED it. It was much less obstructive than other braces appeared to be and was super supportive. Of course, it's going to matter what kind of support you need, but I loved it. Supportsusa has good info...
rise and shine!
Back in season! That means twice a week I’m getting up at 6:30 for a 7 am workout, Mondays and Fridays.
Of course as I’m making breakfast and having tea and checking the internets before working out, I’m like, why do I not always get up at 6:30?
Because I really, really love sleeping.
Also, it’s pouring rain outside, and I had to make my bed while it was still warm. And...

I AM NOT A COACH OR A TRAINER.
You are welcome to ask me questions, but the best person to ask is always going to be the person who can see what you are doing and give you the advice (and encouragement!) you need in person.
Do not be embarrassed, do not be scared, do not be nervous to ask for help. Your coaches are there to help you become a better skater. Asking for help is not a weakness,...
Anonymous asked: Can you give me some tips to stop flailing on tstops? I find that I feel like I have to put my arms out to balance myself while stoping. Also, I can't figure out the baseball slide. My legs just don't want to go into the 4. Am I supposed to slide on my hip, or on the back of my legs?

…a shoulder wrap/brace that they like? (mylifeintraffic, I’m looking at you!)
I fell on my left shoulder back in October and it’s still a little bit tweaky (I went for a hit, my feet went out from under me, I pinned my left arm under myself, and then I got sent to the box for a low block to add insult to injury).
I’ll probably just end up KT-taping it, but I’m...

“Athleticisim, strength, determination, endurance, and tenacity—just a few of the qualities of today’s roller derby player. Roller Derby is no longer the theatrical, predetermined game of yesteryear, and SKATER 26 offers a beautiful glimpse into the sport today, highlighting the sacrifices skaters make to become everyday athletes. yaaaaay
So a while back I got an email saying that my poor little dead iPod nano that I bought back in my undergrad days was being called in by Apple for exploding batteries (or something like that), and that I should send it back to Apple and get a new, replacement nano. I filled out the forms, got the mailing box, and sent my dead little nano on its way.
I was kind of expecting getting my old school...

Ugh. I hate this list. These people have names. 20 is Sacralicious skating promos for Whip It!; sexy Scottish Goth Girl is Miss Conduct, who retired 5 years ago at least; and #2 isn’t even a skater, she a model wearing Nina Kate’s latex line for a spread in Bizarre UK.
This “list” grinds my gears.

offseason
I’m not dead!
We officially went into the offseason almost two weeks ago now, so I’ve been alternating between working out, going to practice, and taking a little bit of a break. I went hiking instead of shopping on Black Friday, I went to Pilates at 7 am today, I’m going to my first Bikram class on Friday, and I’m going to train for the SF Half Marathon and shoot for a...

Anonymous asked: Thank you so much. Mine will be vinyl because I'm not sure how long I'm going to be playing. I love it now, but I need more time to know for sure. (Also my parents bought me them for my birthday.) When I get them I will be sure to wear them around the house a lot. It will probably help my skating too. Thanks again.
Anonymous asked: I just ordered my first pair of skates, and I was wondering if there was anything I should do to/with them before I skate with them. Help?
second verse, same as the first
Still in the pool. I was hopeful that I might have a chance at getting picked up this time, but I wasn’t.
For serious, though, no soft season this year. I’m not allowed to feel sorry for myself and I’m not allowing any more excuses.

OH MAN THE FOOTWORK.
Just sat down and planned out my offseason.
I have a Groupon for two months of unlimited Bikram so I’ve put the classes in my calendar starting December 1st and going all the way through January. (I also had one remaining Iyengar class, so I booked that for the Saturday after Thanksgiving.)
I also bought a Bloomspot for a private Pilates session with nutritional consult, so that’s...

oh but it's cold outside
We had a nice long stretch of warm weather recently.
Today started to actually feel like November — cold, overcast, rainy. “I wish I was an animal that hibernates” weather.
My right ankle feels like it’s held together with chewing gum, which can only mean I’ve gotten to the “hooray, your ankle now predicts/reacts to the weather” stage.
Taped both ankles...
